Achievement One:  Electronically archiving 75 million photographs

The Ministry of Culture and DAL Group Co., Ltd. signed on the sixth of last June an agreement to electronically re-archive the ministry’s photographic wealth of more than 75 million photos and negatives. The agreement provides for keeping these millions of photographs which reflect on the history and heritage of Sudan since independence. The state minister at the Ministry of Culture, Mustafa Tairab, thanking Dal Group for the initiative, Described the agreement as a success that helps in keeping the Nation’s memory well alive.

For his part, Mr. Mohamed Shafie, Director of External Relations in DAL’s Company thanked the Ministry of Culture for allowing his Group to carry this role, which he described as sacred. He said that they would use the company’s technical potential as contribution in preserving the values and heritage of the country.

Mr. Khalid Abdullah, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture signed for the Ministry and Mr. Fathi Mohamed Osman, Director of Marketing Services unit of DAL group signed for the company. The historical moment of signing, unfortunately, passed unnoticed by most of the active Media.

This agreement should be considered as one of the most important successes of the Ministry of Culture, if we knew that the Ministry has been trying to archive this wealth electronically since 2003. Three agreements, with national and international companies, failed to materialise because, insistently the Finance Ministry declined to fund the deals. I was witness to the three Ministry’s trials to save these photos, when I was the undersecretary there, under the concern of the past two ministers Abdel Basit Abdel Majid and Sidig Al Mujtaba. We thank God the efforts to do the job have at last succeeded. DAL Group, feeling its national responsibility, has to be thanked for saving this wealth free of charge, which otherwise could have been lost.
