Prof. Ghandour Affirms National Congress Keenness to Maintain Stability in Abyei Area

The National Congress hoped that the recent agreement on Abyei which was signed lately in Addis Ababa will lead to solution of the issue and realizing security and stability in the area
In a press statement Tuesday at the Headquarters of the union, Chairman of the Information Sector at the National Congress, Prof. Ibrahim Ghandour, affirmed the National Congress keenness on the prevalence of security and stability at Abyei area
He said that the Armed Forces has entered Abyei area, since the beginning, to prevent the dispute that could escalate if Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) managed to annex Abyei to the south
Prof. Ghandour said that the Armed Forces existed in Abyei for the sake of keeping peace and making possible an agreement on Abyei
He expressed his hope that the agreement signed lately in Abyei will pave the way for the solution of the issue and emphasize the right of the people of Abyei to choose the status that they want
Prof. Ghandour said that advent of the Ethiopian peace-keeping forces at Abyei area comes in accordance with a tripartite agreement between the Government of Sudan, the Government of South Sudan and the Government of Ethiopia under the umbrella of the African Union and through funding from the United Nations
Meanwhile, Prof. Ghandour criticized the UN accusation to the government for impeding arrival of humanitarian aid to the citizens who were affected by the recent incidents in South Kordofan
He said that the Armed Forces is assuming the role of protecting the humanitarian aid starting from Al-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State, till Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan State, adding that the displaced citizens have moved to North Kordofan and that part of them have arrived in Khartoum
